The album is the fourth edition of the (UK) ''Now'' series. It is the only album in the series which failed to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart, kept off the top by ''Hits 1''. Although one of its predecessors ''Now 2'' was released earlier that year and charted higher, ''Now 4'' had managed to sell more copies than ''Now 2'' by the end of the year. Although ''Now 4'' was the first in the series to be released on CD, this was only a single-CD release containing 15 tracks (compared to 32 on the standard double LP and cassette). In addition, it included tracks from the regular ''Now 4'', ''Now 3'' and ''Now 2'' releases, the latter two having been released earlier in 1984. (The ''Now 4'' cassette makes reference to "The Best of Now 1984 CD" as being "Also Available", but does not confirm whether this was the originally planned title for the CD that was ultimately released as ''Now 4''). It would be a further two years later before another regularly numbered ''Now'' album was released on CD, with a single-disc issue of ''Now 8'', although ''Now - The Christmas Compact Disc'' and ''Now '86'' were also made available on the format. The CD format became regular from 1987 with a double-disc issue of ''Now 10'' being the first major release. On 8 November 2019, [[Now That's What I Call Music 4 (2019 reissue)|Now 4 was reissued]]. == Track listing == === Record/Tape 1 Side 1 (1) === {| |-style="background-color: #DDDDDD;" | !No. !style="width:60%" | Title !style="width:40%" | Artist !Length |- |1. |"No More Lonely Nights" (Special Dance Mix) |Paul McCartney |4:20 |-style="background-color: #EEEEEE;" | |2. |"Together in Electric Dreams" |Giorgio Moroder with Philip Oakey |3:47 |- |3. |"Why?" |Bronski Beat |3:55 |-style="background-color: #EEEEEE;" | |4. |"The Never Ending Story" |Limahl |3:27 |- |5. |"Warning Sign" |Nick Heyward |3:55 |-style="background-color: #EEEEEE;" | |6. |"Missing You" |John Waite |3:59 |- |7. |"Farewell My Summer Love" |Michael Jackson |3:37 |-style="background-color: #EEEEEE;" | |8. |"Hello" |Lionel Richie |4:05 |} === Record/Tape 1 Side 2 (2) === {| |-style="background-color: #DDDDDD;" | !No. !style="width:60%" | Title !style="width:40%" | Artist !Length |- |1. |"The War Song" |Culture Club |3:55 |-style="background-color: #EEEEEE;" | |2. |"Passengers" |Elton John |3:18 |- |3. |"Too Late for Goodbyes" |Julian Lennon |3:27 |-style="background-color: #EEEEEE;" | |4. |"Shout to the Top!" |The Style Council |3:17 |- |5. |"Doctor!
